Community: Best Practice

A Survey for Arne Parish Planning
Are more open spaces required for recreation?
Are more open spaces required for recreation?

It is good environmental practice for local administrations to conduct strategic assessments for local land-use planning at regular intervals. If consultation with citizens about areas for development is done every 5-10 years, against a set of principles set for a longer term or by a higher authority, less time will need to be spent discussing subsequent individual planning applications. Repeated surveys also show how citizen requirements change with time.

Consultations at regular intervals also fulfil Agenda 21 recommendations. Citizens can be consulted not only on housing and business developments; their opinions can also be surveyed on a variety of topics, such as employment, transport, education and other public services, and on their environment. It is democratic to include all the responses in planning by the local administrations.

In the Parish of Arne, on the south coast of England, the survey by partners involved in this portal helped the first full survey of householder opinions since 2002. An aim of Naturalliance is to make the technology used for the survey easily available through this portal for all local communities across Europe, in order to improve local democracy and the livelihoods and recreation of citizens.
